In the 90's, hip hop focused on making beats from samples. Mainly because there was a lack of instrumentation and gear available in the community.
Hip Hop Music Producers who couldn't afford to hire an orchestral ensemble or a session band had to grab existing ideas from records, this is known as sampling.
But, the samples weren't the only "magic" in the 90's hip-hop sound. It was about sonics, texture and converters.
What gave the beat that knock was the converters in the machines and outboard gear.
In the video above, I show you how to achieve the sound of the MPC 60 using free plugins. You have to downsample to 40,000kHz and use a 12bit bit depth.
To recreate some of those mastering converter sounds, I love Gold Clip. No plugins on the market sound like it. It's my favorite clipper.
You can find Kontakt libraries with vintage sound modules from the 90s, like E-MU Proteus rack for Kontakt.
It's all about finding the right sounds from that time period.
